"The
Distribution of Assets in the
Elderly Population Living in the
Community,"
Kaiser Family
Foundation:
The issue paper -- by Barbara
Lyons, a foundation vice
president and deputy director of
the
Kaiser Commission
on Medicaid and the Uninsured;
Andy Schneider of Medicaid
Policy, LLC; and Katherine
Desmond, a consultant --
examines the assets of elderly
individuals still living in the
community who are at highest
risk for needing nursing home
care. The paper finds 84% of the
elderly most likely to need
nursing home care would exhaust
their assets within one year in
a nursing home. Further, most
elderly individuals do not have
enough assets to pay for one
year or more of nursing home
care (Lyons et al., "The
Distribution of Assets in the
Elderly Population Living in the
Community," June 2005).
