When the first patient entered Saint Elizabeth's in 1855, he had the place all to himself. By 1950, with 7,000 residents, the institution had changed from a haven to a crowded pen. The civil rights movement of the 1960s led to a general release of this patient population and the closing of much of the hospital, but questions of how best to treat the mentally ill remain unresolved.
